It’s movie time! ‘The Quick and the Dead’ should have been better

Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch “The Quick and the Dead” with Sharon Stone and Gene Hackman. I’m not a big fan of Westerns (that’s heresy in American cinema), but “The Quick and the Dead” has an outstanding cast and story, but it was fumbled by a director who should have done a better job.

“The Quick and the Dead” is the story of a woman who comes to a town for its gunfighter tournament. It’s a single-elimination tournament – with the emphasis on “elimination.” However, it’s not just the gunfighters and the tournament. Most of the characters have an ax to grind (gun to shoot?) for reasons of their own on a personal level with the others.

Stone was the driving force behind “The Quick and the Dead” as she had total control over the cast and the selection of the director. While hitting a home run with the cast, from herself to Hackman to Leonardo DiCaprio to Russell Crowe, she managed to strike out by choosing Sam Raimi to direct.

Raimi doesn’t do a horrible job, such as the late Bob Saget did with a piece of dreck called “Dirty Work” with the late Norm Macdonald, but with so much top-shelf talent, it was a shame the film couldn’t have been better for the audience.

The central storyline in “The Quick and the Dead” is that Stone wants to open a total can of whoop-ass on Hackman, whose character is the cruel, murderous master of the town, but takes her time in hitting her stride. In the end, only two are left standing and you won’t have any trouble figuring out which ones live to tell the tale.

You shouldn’t be able to find “The Quick and the Dead” and you’ll find it to be a motion picture of some depth … I guarantee it!
