Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch “All the President’s Men” with Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman. As you know, this is about the Watergate political scandal and the two reporters whose work helped expose a President Richard Nixon and his sleazy cronies.
“All the President’s Men” won four Oscars and was nominated for four more. Besides Redford and Hoffman as Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, you get a tour-de-force from Jason Robards as legendary Post editor Ben Bradlee, as well as top-shelf efforts from Jane Alexander, who nabbed a nomination; Jack Warden as a tough sub-editor to Robards; and Hal Holbrook as the shadowy “Deep Throat,” who gave Woodward inside information.
“All the President’s Men” isn’t just significant for its recounting of history, but also a reminder that whatever happened in the wake of a president’s resignation, not much has changed in Washington D.C. in the more than two generations since the movie’s release in 1976.
The story of “All the President’s Men” begins with the break-in of Democratic national headquarters in the now-infamous Watergate complex. The details of this break-in ultimately lead to the exposure of an ongoing, insidious efforts by Nixon and his supporters. Of course, the president didn’t initially appear involved in the shenanigans, but the trail kept rising all the way to the top.
The movie shows how the reporters were meticulous in their research but also had to weave their way through a minefield of Nixon supporters who tried to block the reporters and keep the truth away from them.
Of course, Nixon ultimately resigned and some of his “men” went to jail. President Gerald Ford pardoned Nixon and the nation moved forward and the now-called Watergate scandal was over, but not forgotten.
You shouldn’t have any trouble finding “All the President’s Men” and you’ll find it to be a superior motion picture that you need to see again. It is simply sensational … I guarantee it!
