Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood.” Here’s a great one from Quentin Tarantino, who only does great ones, but this isn’t his best. “Once Upon a Time …” is a story of Hollyweird in 1969 that is grand in its scope and wonderful in its execution and acting and was nominated for 10 (count ’em 10) Oscars and earned two statues.
Of course, you know that “Once Upon a Time …” co-stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margo Robbie and is the story of a fading TV star who lives next to an up-and-coming director named “Roman Polanski” (the quote marks are because he is a character in the film). DiCaprio is the fading star; Pitt is his stunt-double, handyman and entourage rolled into one; and Robbie is “Sharon Tate” (again with the quote marks).
“Once Upon a Time …” also brings Charles Manson’s “family” into the picture and there’s some, but not a ton of violence, except at the end when Pitt ratchets up his violence and DiCaprio brings a fiery conclusion to one “family” member. I’ll let you wait and see (or remember) how Pitt and DiCaprio got mixed up with Manson’s “family.”
You’ll find truly great work from DiCaprio and Pitt and Robbie does as much acting with a glance and her physical presence as in the lines she has in the movie. Also, you’ll see a 10-year-old actor have a sensational scene with DiCaprio that is worthy of at least an Oscar nomination if not an outright Oscar.
“Once Upon a Time …” did win two Oscars from its crop of 10 nominations (one for Pitt in a supporting role and one for production design). It also won three Golden Globes and two other Globe nominations – including a winner for best “musical or comedy.” God, I’ll never understand how they would categorize a film such as this as a “musical or comedy.”
You won’t have any trouble at all finding “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood” and when you do, you will find it an intense experience … I guarantee it!
