It’s movie time! ‘Assault on a Queen’ is a nice caper film with Sinatra

Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch the high-seas caper film “Assault on a Queen” in which Frank Sinatra uses a submarine to rob the ocean liner Queen Mary.

Yes, you got a bunch of criminals using a World War II-era German U-boat to get aboard and rob the vault of the Queen Mary. “Assault on a Queen” is worth watching not only for Sinatra, but because the film is just about totally character-driven and the “action” of the day wouldn’t be a ripple for moviegoers today.

With “Assault on a Queen,” you get Sinatra as a diver who is forced to accept a contract from a group seeking underwater treasure. He, along with his sidekick, get drawn into the trio’s scheme and, along the way, Sinatra comes across the U-Boat  on the Atlantic Ocean floor. Of course, the sub has remained sealed tight since it went down during World War II and Sinatra manages to get inside and raise the long-forgotten vessel.

Since they realize that they’re not gonna find the undersea treasure, the group then comes up the idea of using the submarine to rob the ocean liner. It’s a creative story with interesting details of the salvage of the submarine and its subsequent renovation by the gang. “Assault on a Queen” has a well-written screenplay by none other than Rod “The Twilight Zone” Serling.

I won’t spoil the ending of “Assault on a Queen” other than to say that Sinatra, as he usually did, survives and gets away with the girl at the end.

I’m not sure how difficult it will be for you to find it, but see if you can. “Assault on a Queen” is more than worth your time and it’s a nice slice of the 1960s to watch and enjoy. I guarantee it!
