It’s movie time! ‘American Flyers’ is excellent, even though most of you never saw it

Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch “American Flyers” with Kevin Costner. Here’s a pre-megastar turn for Costner, but the entire cast does a wonderful job.

“American Flyers” is the story of a pair of brothers in a family crisis and a bicycle race puts it all into gear. You might first believe that “American Flyers” is about guys who put handbills under windshield wipers at strip malls, but I also explain in my review how a “flyer” is NOT a handbill (it’s actually a train).

So, with “American Flyers” you get the brothers from a dysfunctional family (Costner as the older brother and David Marshall Grant as the younger) and Kevin’s a doctor in sports medicine, while David is knocking about and riding his bike.

As the family drama plays out, a bicycle race comes to dominate the brothers, who, of course, wind up riding in the race. Up pops an old nemesis of Kevin’s and also a new love emerges for Grant.

The single scene that makes “American Flyers” worthwhile is between Costner’s boss, played to perfection by John Amos, and his son. Amos, who is the medical head of the sports medicine arm at university, is talking to his lazy son, who says he wants to be a bowler because he would be unique in the sports world because there are no black pro bowlers. Amos’ increasing incredulous expressions are priceless in this drama!

In any case, you’ll find “American Flyers” interesting and offering a different kind of family drama. You’ll love it even though you don’t remember (or even saw) “American Flyers” … I guarantee it!
