Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch the “James Bond” classic “Goldfinger.” Here’s the start of what would become the prime formula for the 007 franchise: world travel; big-time villain; and the first step into the gadgets of the Bond-ian world.
“Goldfinger” is the straightforward story of a criminal who wants to contaminate the U.S. gold supply with nuclear waste so that his own fortune in gold becomes more valuable. Our superspy “James Bond,” played by Sean Connery, is put onto the villain at first just to observe, but then becomes embroiled in the plot.
Like all the “Bond” films to come, “Goldfinger” has scenes in a variety of geographical locations. For “Goldfinger,” they are the UK, Europe and its climax in the U.S. at Fort Knox in Kentucky. Of course, “James Bond” is sent to a stud farm!
However, the beauty of “Goldfinger” is that it is actually a wonderfully-plotted film with generally excellent work by the cast, especially our headliner, Mr. Connery – and you won’t find the pathetic efforts of the second-worst 007 … Daniel Craig, whose lone expression in a movie appears as if he’s continually having a bowel movement.
OK, back to “Goldfinger.” You also get arguably the best-ever golf match in cinema history as 077 squares off against “Auric Goldfinger” as well as some nice opening scenes of Miami Beach. You also get one of cinema’s most iconic bad guys: the steel-studded hat-throwing bodyguard named “Oddjob.”
So, you won’t have any trouble finding “Goldfinger.” You’ll have trouble not watching it twice today … it is simply great cinema … I guarantee it!
