It’s movie time! For dark drama, you won’t find many better than ‘Citizen X’

Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch “Citizen X” a dark, disturbing drama from early HBO efforts in a break from Hollywood. “Citizen X” is the story of one of the worst serial killers ever … and he was in Russia and partially shielded by the Communist Party.

Just how good is “Citizen X?” It earned a win in each for a Golden Globe and a Primetime Emmy (remember, it is a made-for-TV drama and wasn’t eligible for Oscar considerations) and got another nomination for a Globe and three other nominations for Emmys.

Headliners Stephen Rea and Donald Sutherland play a forensic detective and the only Communist bureaucrat who actually helped find the killer. Both do simply some of their best work and both are A-list when it comes to actor’s actors. Along with Rea and Sutherland, Jeffrey DeMunn does superlatively creepy work as the killer and the actor has specialized in eclectic roles during his career.

In any case, “Citizen X” spans nearly a decade as it took that long to catch the killer because he was a member of the Communist Party and the ruling government never could admit that its perfect society in the Soviet Union was incapable of producing such a creature. They left that to the United States and other “decadent” societies.

Still, dogged detective work and a bureaucrat who managed to work within the system to overcome it, manage to identify the killer.

“Citizen X” is dark and disturbing because the killer’s victims are all children and there are some very harsh scenes of his violence. However, the film isn’t prurient in showing this violence and it is in context with the motion picture.

“Citizen X” is one of the early efforts of HBO and, along with films such as “The Late Shift,” showed the coming future of filmmaking and releasing movies in a non-traditional way … on TV first and only.

I haven’t checked to see how or if you can find “Citizen X” (sorry, you’ll have to do that yourself), but if you do find it, it will be an experience … I guarantee it!
