Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch “Major League” since the MLB season of 2024 has just started.
Just as some films become synonymous with individual sports or college life, you’ll find that “Major League” is the gold standard of Major League Baseball. No, it’s not the best baseball movie, but it is the most recognizable to non-baseball fans because of a simple phrase: “… just a bit outside.”
“Major League” is simply the definition of the soul of baseball.
In “Major League,” you get Tom Berenger as the ostensible lead as the old and hurt catcher and team leader, but you’ll more enjoy the supporting cast of Charlie Sheen, Corbin Bernsen, Wesley Snipes and Dennis Hasbert as the Voodoo-practicing slugger and his hitting god called “Jobu.” In “Major League,” these misfits come together as a way of allowing the Cleveland baseball club to move to Miami (the film arrived before the Marlins were born).
So and of course, the predictable happens: The losers become winners and spoil the plan of the greedy, lack-of-tradition owner.
I have to write with all transparency that I’ve come to avoid watching MLB. I was a fantasy baseball fanatic for nearly 15 years, but have come to the conclusion that baseball is a boring sport to watch. Sorry to all of baseball from youth leagues to high schools and colleges and onto the minor leagues and then MLB.
Ah well.
You won’t have any trouble finding “Major League” with the opening of MLB season, so enjoy it! You’ll love it … I guarantee it!
