It’s movie time! ‘Liar Liar’ is how to do a one-joke flick

Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch “Liar Liar” with Jim Carrey. Here’s a one-joke movie that keeps you laughing from beginning to end and is a showcase for Carrey’s total talent in comedy from expressions, voice and physical action.

“Liar Liar” is about an attorney who lies virtually all the time to achieve anything from a courtroom to his dysfunction with his son and former wife. His lying goes beyond being habitual and it is clear that he is a congenital liar.

Well, at his son’s birthday party that he missed because he was having a sexual liaison with a partner in his firm (he’s looking for her support in getting his own partnership), the boy makes a wish: Carrey cannot lie for the next 24 hours.

Of course, this causes a passel of problems for Carrey from his sexual comments to a beautiful woman in the elevator of his condo to his secretary and finally to the adulterous woman whom he’s representing in a divorce case.

Outside of Carrey’s impressive work, it is just as impressive how filmmakers manage to keep so many comedic balls in the air with the one-joke premise of “Liar Liar.” Director Tom Shadyac is just as good behind the cameras as Carrey is in front of them.

You won’t have any trouble finding “Liar Liar,” so enjoy it! You’ll love it … I guarantee it!
