Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch “Max Dugan Returns” and remember the magic that Neil Simon could bring to the big-screen with his stories and the dialogue he wrote for the characters.
“Max Dugan Returns” is the story of a schoolteacher who’s skating on the edge of poverty as a single mother with a high-school age son (Marsha Mason as the mother and Matthew Broderick in his first movie as the boy). Their lives become changed in a most incredible way when “Max Dugan,” played by the always wonderful Jason Robards, pops into their lives. He’s Marsha’s estranged father with a suitcase of money he scammed out of the mob in Las Vegas.
Well, he wants to buy his way into their lives and boy, does he ever buy things. However, it is personal relationships that matter most and the whole thing is just wonderful as it proceeds to a somewhat expected ending … but there is a nice little twist that you’ll enjoy.
The best part of “Max Dugan Returns” is that it is endearing, watchable and totally worth your time. Mason, Robards, Broderick and the supporting cast all put together an effort in a film that pretty much bombed at the box office.
Oh, “Max Dugan Returns” is Simon’s only movie based on an original screenplay. For his other work in cinema, his screenplays were all adapted from his plays that were on Broadway.
You might have to spend a little time finding “Max Dugan Returns,” but it’s worth the effort. You’ll love it … I guarantee it!
