It’s movie time! ‘Office Space’ is an anti-corporate cult classic

Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch “Office Space” with Ron Livingston and Jennifer Aniston.

“Office Space” is a cult classic that gained acceleration through video rentals and world-of-mouth. It is taken from a cartoon of a denizen of cubicles and translated to the big screen by its author Mike “Beavis and Butt-Head” Judge.

It is the story of a worker at a computer company. He hates his job and tries to get hypnotized into being able to work without understanding the mind-numbing mediocrity of what he is doing. Livingston, as “Peter Gibbons,” has an epiphany as his hypnotist dies in front of him and then begins to live his dream.

Coming along for the ride in “Office Space” is Aniston and she doesn’t like her job, but isn’t as cavalier and revolutionary as Livingston in how to deal with it and life. “Office Space” is an indictment of large companies with stupid executives; of wasting employees’ time with meaningless drivel called “meetings;” and the ultimate intellectual freedom that hourly-wage earners enjoy.

“Office Space” wraps up with a happy ending for everyone except the corporate drones, but not just as you might expect.

You know “Office Space,” but it’s worth the little effort it will take to find. You’ll love it again or for the first time … I guarantee it!
