It’s movie time! ‘Barbarians at the Gate’ is a tale of greed told well

Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch “Barbarians at the Gate” about Wall Street, greed and other such shenanigans of a corporate take-over in the 1980s. It stars the late James Garner and is a wonderful film.

“Barbarians at the Gate” is one of the early HBO movies that formed a vanguard of cinema that didn’t include Hollywood studios. Over the next generation, the non-studio film would gain acceptance for offering as much quality, if not more, than the usual dreck shoveled out by Hollywood.

The film is the story of the sell-out of RJR Nabisco. It’s executives wanted to buy out the company and, in the era of the “junk bond” mess, it became the hottest of hot properties and spiked the greed of just about everyone involved from shareholders to the board to the sleazy denizens of Wall Street that oozed from every financial sewer you could name.

As for a film, “Barbarians at the Gate” is simply terrific. Garner was the wonderful choice of a lead character as the CEO of RJR Nabisco and who wants to lead an executive team into ownership of the company. Well, that runs afoul of scummy takeover specialist Henry Kravis, who jumps with both feet into the fray.

You’ll find wonderful efforts from just about everyone in the cast and although “Barbarians at the Gate” is set many years ago, you’ll instantly recognize the sleaziness that remains at the heart of corporate America today.

I’m not sure if you can easily find “Barbarians at the Gate” as I haven’t tried recently. However, you’ll love it again or for the first time … I guarantee it!
