Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch “Back to School” with the late, great comedian Rodney Dangerfield. “Back to School” is Dangerfield’s best effort as a headliner in films and easily comes out ahead of “Easy Money.” However, he is best remembered for the golf and comedy classic “Caddyshack.”
In “Back to School,” Dangerfield plays self-made millionaire “Thornton Mellon” and he winds up in college classrooms as a way to help bolster his son’s confidence. The young man hadn’t had much success in college until Dad comes along and brings his own brand to the campus.
“Back to School” has two iconic parts – the first is the dive (as in swimming pool) called the “Triple Lindy;” and the second is the work of the late comedian Sam Kinnison as a psychotic professor to screams at Dangerfield, “SAY IT! SAY IT!”
The supporting cast in “Back to School” is strong for Dangerfield from Keith Gordon, who plays his son; to two-time Oscar nominee Robert Downey Jr; to the late Sally Kellerman, who is a mellow professor who becomes his love interest; and finally to Ned Beatty as “Dean Martin” in a small role as the university’s dean. All do a wonderful job and you’re sure to enjoy their work.
If you want some belly laughs or if you’re just bored, then watch “Back to School.” It will make your day … I guarantee it!
