Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch “Tower Heist” with Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy. Well, let’s just say, “watch” since Stiller is no headliner and Murphy’s probably still upset that he was roped into this one more than 10 years ago.
“Tower Heist” is the story of a Bernie Madoff-type character who gets found out; arrested; and is being held in his sumptuous digs at a high-rise tower in Manhattan. Everyone who loved the bad guy now wants to skin him alive, especially employees at the tower who have kissed his backside for years – and now he’s cost them their pension and possibly their jobs.
The bad guy has hidden in plain sight $20 million. Stiller and the other employees ind out about $20 million that the government doesn’t realize that he’s hidden in the penthouse. So, they go to steal it – but there’s a twist to how the money’s hidden.
I like heist flicks. Even bad, they’re usually fun. “Tower Heist” skates on thin ice at the edge of this particular genre’s pool.
As I already noted, Stiller is the co-star with Murphy, but gets a ton more screen time. Ben just isn’t headliner material and it comes through in an obvious way with “Tower Heist.” As for Eddie, I know he’d like to forget it.
In the end, the bad guy gets his comeuppance and the good guys (and gals) come out the winners. Although a bad, bad motion picture, check out “Tower Heist.” Remember, it’s a “heist” movie … I guarantee it.
