Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch “Corvette Summer” with Mark Hamill and Annie Potts. I write, “let’s watch,” but it would be more accurate to write, “let’s torture ourselves more than just a little bit.”
“Corvette Summer” was supposed to be one of the “summer” movies of fluff where audiences enjoy 90 minutes or so of watchable fun without having to think too much about a plot. Well, filmmakers didn’t just miss the mark, they created something horrible and abhorrent. “Corvette Summer” is one of the worst-ever film released by Hollywood.
It’s sad, since “Corvette Summer” had promise with two young actors (and Hamill was just off the amazing success of the first “Star Wars” film) and an storyline that could have been at least “summer movie-ish.” It wasn’t to be and so “Corvette Summer” stunk up theaters in 1978.
Just for the record, “Corvette Summer” is the story of a high school loner (Hamill) who is the top auto-shop class member and is the inspiration for the class to build an incredible custom Corvette. The car is stolen from the students and Hamill begins a quest to find the car and return it to the school. See? Nice potential for “summer” movie fluff.
Oh, the studio also failed miserably with the movie posters for “Corvette Summer.” I decided to use one version with Hamill and Potts standing on the car, but the posters at the time of the film’s premiere showed Potts in a wetsuit with only one fin and Hamill drawn to appear as if some homeless person was chosen as a model for the poster. Sigh. They couldn’t even get the poster to be adequate. You can see all the posters in this review.
Along the way, he hooks up with Potts and ultimately finishes his quest, although by that time you’ve either snapped off the streaming network or, if you have it on disk, sent the DVD spinning out the window (certainly no one is stupid enough to have gone to the extra expense of a Blu-Ray version).
If you want to give “Corvette Summer” a try, well, go ahead. However, don’t say I didn’t warn you. It is simply awful … I guarantee it.
