Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch “The Choirboys” as one of the best examples of how not to make a movie. “The Choirboys” was adapted from Joseph Wambaugh’s bestseller of the same name, but is so putrid he managed to get his name taken off any association with the film.
“The Choirboys” is the story of a group of nightwatch police officers in Los Angeles and their personal foibles and fears that come out whenever they have a party they call a “choir practice.”
However, “The Choirboys’” director, Robert Aldrich, managed to screw up virtually every aspect of Wambaugh’s story; couldn’t manage the wonderful cast he assembled; and brought out a steaming pile of garbage that is a perennial candidate for any “worst movie” list.
“The Choirboys” are basically anti-heroes because of the 1970s setting and you get to see the fallible human side of each one and it often is not pretty. However, the film plays out to having the group come out on top over the LAPD bureaucracy in a complete reversal of the ending to the story as written by Wambaugh.
Worse yet, the filmmakers changed the names of a number of characters in “The Choirboys” as filmmakers have been doing for decades and, like so many others, the characters’ new names are less creative than how Wambaugh named them.
All-in-all, it drills down to one comment: “The Choirboys” stinks … I guarantee it!
