It’s movie time! ‘Son in Law’ and Pauly Shore are endearing

Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch the marvelously endearing comedy “Son in Law” with Paul Shore. He does a good job and it’s truly a good one. As I noted in my original review: “Yes, I wrote Pauly Shore. And “Son in Law.” And ‘truly good one.’ And, no, I haven’t lost my mind.”

“Son in Law” is the story of a small-town girl (“Rebecca Warner,” played by Carla Gaugino) who is at the top of her high school class and heads off to college in a big city. Well, it all doesn’t come together for her and soon she’s become an ostracized loner.

So, it’s “Cue Pauly time!” in “Son in Law.” Shore, who plays “Crawl” and he’s a sixth-year senior. He comes to the rescue by pulling her out of her shell with a new haircut and wardrobe (“weasel wear”). Soon she’s roller-blading with him at the beach and even getting a tattoo. “It’s permanent,” Shore says in a mood of convention when she asks what he thinks of the idea.

Of course, she goes home for Thanksgiving, but doesn’t want to see her old boyfriend because she knows he’s going to propose. So, Gaugino hauls Shore along as her fiancée and he lands like nuclear waste into the rural family and rural community … except that he ultimately wins over just about everyone.

So, the “Son in Law” plows his way through encounters with her father, mother, brother and, of course, the boyfriend. In one of the stereotypical moments, he runs the family combine through a field while John Denver plays on the tape deck (yes, remember cassette tapes?).

How Shore handles all of this and especially that as an actor he can convey being endearing from a character better suited to shocking people than getting to like them is impressive from a usually less-than-impressive actor.

I will always remember Shore for “Son in Law” and I’m absolutely sure you will enjoy this film. If you haven’t seen it, see it immediately; if you’ve seen it, cast aside any negative thoughts and see it immediately. You will be somewhat enriched by the “Son in Law” … I guarantee it!
