Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch “Charlie Wilson’s War” starring Tom Hanks and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman. Here’s a wonderful film from the late legendary director Mike Nichols and it is simply must-see.
Not only do you have Hanks, but Hoffman is really, truly special working his character in this one. Fortunately, you can ignore co-star Julia Roberts as she does her usual mediocre turn and I haven’t seen a film starring or co-starring her since “Pretty Woman” that’s watching outside of “Charlie Wilson’s War.” Then again, I avoid watching her on-screen at all costs.
With “Charlie Wilson’s War” you have Hoffman as a disgruntled CIA agent. He’s getting screwed over on a once-promised promotion and he’s even paying a “witch” to cast a spell on his ignorant boss. He lands up with the group helping freedom fighters in Afghanistan against the intruding Soviet Union communists.
It is several scenes in “Charlie Wilson’s War” with Hanks and Hoffman that make the film. Also, despite the detraction from Roberts, you get a simply terrific effort from the under-appreciated Amy Adams as Hanks’ assistant (she’s twice as talented, if not more, than Roberts).
Hanks and Hoffman work to help the Afghani freedom fighters, but, while winning the battle, ultimately lose the war because of a lackadaisical international follow-up by the U.S.
You won’t have any trouble finding “Charlie Wilson’s War” and I’m absolutely certain you’ll enjoy it … I guarantee it!
