Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time tonight, let’s watch “Blood Diamond.” If you’re in the mood for a dark, violent drama, then simply cannot do much better than “Blood Diamond” with Leonardo DiCaprio, Djimon Honsou and Jennifer Connelly.
“Blood Diamond” is set in the time when the so-called “blood diamonds” were at the peak of financing civil war in Africa and the product ultimately became a pariah commodity for most of the world.
In “Blood Diamond,” you have a man (Honsou) who finds an incredible diamond and smuggles it away. However, “Blood Diamond” is the story of two men:
- The fisherman who steals the diamond on his quest to rescue his son from homicidal rebels who force people into slavery to dig up the “blood diamonds” and are indoctrinating the boy into their murderous philosophy.
- Enter DiCaprio as a white mercenary out to make a buck and he smuggles diamonds.
Of course, the two men meet and their fates become intwined. Along the way, they acquire Connelly as a photojournalist who is pursuing the story of blood diamonds in Africa.
“Blood Diamond’s” violent images are disturbing and the entire film has very little in the way of an uplifting moment … even at the denouement as the world begins address the issue of the blood diamonds of Africa.
Both DiCaprio and Honsou are powerful, driven men, but each on his own course. Connelly is the jaded watchful eye.
You can pretty much guess the outcome of “Blood Diamond,” but don’t worry – it is simply a very powerful, violent drama that’s more than worth your time … I guarantee it!
