Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time tonight, let’s watch “Magnum Force” with Clint Eastwood as his most iconic character on screen: “ ‘Dirty’ Harry Callahan.”
“Magnum Force” is the sequel to “Dirty Harry” and, unlike many sequels, it does a good job and, frankly, is nearly as solid as the original. The trio that followed as “sequels” were all dreck, except for the wonderful work by Tyne Daly in the otherwise horrid “The Enforcer.”
In any case, “Magnum Force” is the story of police being vigilantes. Folks were fed up then (as they are now) with crime, violence and a lenient judicial system or “progressive culture” that put criminals back on the streets. Well, only an idiot wouldn’t have been then; or is now. Sigh. Well, there are cops in “Magnum Force” that begin to work to put a stop to that crap!
“Magnum Force” shows a side of Eastwood’s “Dirty Harry” that few would have imagined at the time: He was a strict, law-and-order cop, but he didn’t like the idea of vigilantes evening up the score after the “system” allowed the criminals to go free. Eastwood has a nice speech about such things in the film.
Of course, the bad cops were amazed that he wouldn’t join them and so he … well, watch the movie and you’ll see!
“Magnum Force” also has the first nude scene in a movie by the late Suzanne Somers (she is topless at a gangster’s pool party that’s interrupted by a bomb thrown by a cop), but it is actually layered and works from an intelligent screenplay.
So, get out there and find “Magnum Force.” You’ll appreciate my advice … I guarantee it!
