It’s movie time! ‘Top Secret!’ one of the best comedies you never saw

Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time tonight, let’s watch “Top Secret!” with Val Kilmer in his first film. “Top Secret!” is from the Zucker brothers and Jim Abrahams – you know, the “Airplane!” and “Naked Gun!” guys!

Whenever someone asks my favorite “forgotten” films, I immediately tell them to watch “Big Trouble” with Tim Allen and Rene Russo from Dave Barry’s novel. However, running a close second is “Top Secret!” – and it has one of the strangest lines ever uttered by an actor on-screen (and you’ll have to read my review for the full quote because it involves tampons).

“Top Secret!” has Kilmer playing “Nick Rivers,” who is a popular recording star in the U.S. with hits “Skeet Surfin’” “Skeet City” and “Your Skeetin’ Heart” with Tammy Waynette (no cameo for her, though). He is invited to perform in what is basically East Germany – remember when there was an East Germany – and gets involved in an espionage plot.

Really, that’s all you really have to know about the plot of “Top Secret!” The rest is visual gags that come at you faster than machine-gun fire and nice quips such as when Omar Sharif picks something up from a sidewalk and tells a street vendor selling novelties, “You forgot your phony dog poo.” “What phony dog poo?” deadpans the vendor.

Among the moments at the end of the film is an Old West bar fight – underwater!

Watch it and you’ll understand!

Ah well, check out “Top Secret!” … you’ll be on the floor … I guarantee it!
