Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time tonight, let’s watch “Semi-Tough” in remembrance of actor/musician/songwriter Kris Kristofferson, who died at 88 this past weekend on Sept. 28, 2024, in Hawaii.
Kristofferson espoused an essence of “cool” and worked with the best in music and movies (with one exception), even with legendary director Sam Peckinpah on the cult fav “Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia” as well as the, well, awful CB radio-era flick “Convoy.” RIP, Kris … you were a talented soul.
“Semi-Tough” is a movie about football co-starring Burt Reynolds and Kristofferson. It had its premiere in 1978 and the movie’s production has held up OK in showcasing that era (especially Kristofferson’s sweet Datsun 260Z) but its criticism of the silly self-improvement groups of the 1970s remains today the best and most watchable “hoot!” in the film today.
With “Semi-Tough,” you get Reynolds and Kristofferson as teammates on the professional team in Maimi. They’re among the best players in the league and live together along with Jill Clayburgh in what was supposed to show how liberal everybody was becoming with men and women living together and the woman cursing like a Scorsese-movie-to-be.
Other than the biting criticism and simmering sarcasm about self-help movements, highlighted in “Semi-Tough” by Bert Convey as “Friedrich Bismarck” with his “BEAT” train and his penchant for calling is disciples “assh***s, you also get in the supporting cast Robert Preston as the strange owner of the Miami club and Lotte Lenya as the founder of “Pelfing” (remember “Rolfing?” … and she was the “007” villain with a knife blade in her shoe).
Ah, well. Another star has fallen. Again, RIP Kris … you will be missed. And, don’t miss “Semi-Tough” as you’ll enjoy the trip back to the 1970s … I guarantee it!
