Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time tonight, let’s watch “The Seven-Ups” with Roy Scheider. “The Seven-Ups” has one of the best-ever car-chase scenes in a movie and you’ll really enjoy the action in the cops-and-robbers motion picture.
If you liked the iconic car chase in “Bullitt” with Steve McQueen and the legendary one in “The French Connection” with Gene Hackman winning an Oscar as “Popeye Doyle,” then you’ll really enjoy “The Seven-Ups.” The same stunt team that did the other two chase scenes were responsible for the near 10-minute special in “The Seven-Ups.”
Most importantly: the chase was filmed with cameras … not aided by computers or CGI or any fancy technology. It is old-fashioned crashes, collisions and mayhem filmed on city streets and the open highway. A stuntman said the ending of the chase is an homage to the crash that claimed the life of screen star Jayne Mansfield in 1967.
As a story, “The Seven-Ups” is about a special detective squad in New York City in the 1970s. It specializes in major cases where the bad guys go away for seven years or more (no, it’s not about a bunch of cops drinking soda). Fifty years ago, such specialized squads were new to law enforcement and look at askance by “traditional” police.
In “The Seven-Ups” a two-man team is kidnapping and holding mobsters for ransom. Scheider, as the leader of the cops, becomes first embroiled on a professional level and then takes it personal after his buddy detective is killed by the kidnappers.
You will find an intelligent story and decent acting in “The Seven-Ups.” The production values are a bit tired by today’s standard, but you’ll enjoy the whole thing … I guarantee it!
