Today (Friday, Nov. 1, 2024) is the international Fountain Pen Day! It’s difficult enough to get anyone to write in this modern keyboard, email and text day-and-age and, so, it is sometimes difficult to remember that we once had “fountain pens” instead of ballpoints and rollerballs. Of course, these are pens that you fill with ink from a container or have a cartridge of ink to insert into the pen. Here is a photo of my collection of Montblanc fountain pens. You’ll find the Traveller at top (the “Traveller” has a cartridge because the pressurized cabin of jet can make a regular fountain pen discharge its ink); the company’s mainstay Meisterstuck le Grand in the middle; the original design of the StarWalker at left; the company’s smallest (the Mozart), designed for a handbag (and this model is no longer produced); and at the bottom is a 1950s era pen that I found on eBay. I staged this shot of my pens at our home here in Naples, Fla., on Oct. 27, 2024, and Fountain Pen Day is celebrated each year on the first Friday of each November.
