Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time tonight, let’s watch “Days of Thunder” with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. With the NASCAR championship just decided this past weekend, auto-racing fans can check out “Days of Thunder” not just for the NASCAR component, but also as a solid film to enjoy.
“Days of Thunder” is about a new
driver being brought to NASCAR. Since Cruise is the driver and he’s about as Southern as I am a Martian, his character of “Cole Trickle” is a Californian being brought to NASCAR because of his overwhelming talent. However, it is up to Robert Duvall to mold that talent into a winner.
Along the way, you get a rivalry-turned-to-friendship; the boy-meets-girl that actually injured driver meets doctor (Kidman is in the white jacket); and all the stereotypical turns you should expect. However, “Days of Thunder” is more because of the impressive work of the cast as well as being under the direction of Tony Scott. It’s also fun to see racing back in 1990 in a film where Hollywood doesn’t do a hatchet job on the South or that oh-so-Southern tradition of NASCAR.
You won’t be surprised by anything in “Days of Thunder,” but being along for this ride is just what the doctor ordered for an enjoyable 107 minutes out of your life. You will all too easily find that “Days of Thunder” is as much story as it is NASCAR … I guarantee it!
