It’s movie time! ‘Can’t Buy Me Love’ choked with stereotypes, but you’ll enjoy it

Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time tonight, let’s watch the underrated youth comedy-drama “Can’t Buy Me Love.” Although stereotypes rage and you’ve seen it all before, “Can’t Buy Me Love” is a watchable film that will leave you humming the Beatles’ tune used as the title.

“Can’t Buy Me Love” is the story of a nerd in high school who gets sidetracked from buying an expensive telescope to “buying” the friendship of a girl. No, not that kind of transaction – he believes that by hanging out with her that he’ll become accepted by the “cool” kids at school.

His prediction is spot-on and he quickly becomes the most popular of the cool kids. However, it comes at a price – you’ll know obviously that he loses his best friend and ultimately, too, becomes a pariah with the “in crowd.” However, “Can’t Buy Me Love” is a sweet story told in a way to overcome the stereotypes.

The most interesting thing I found about the actors is that the late Amanda Peterson was just 15 during filming in 1987 and played a high school senior. Usually, these Hollywood tales has a much older woman as the high schooler (Olivia Newton-John was 29 when “Grease” came out in 1978). Tragically, Peterson died in 2015 at 43 of an accidental overdose of morphine.

Also, the “Can’t Buy Me Love” has one scene where the guy takes the girl to an airplane “graveyard” where junked aircraft dating back to World War II are stored (it is the real-life Davis-Monthan Air Force Base “Aircraft Boneyard” near Tucson, Ariz.) and that makes for a nice, unexpected diversion to show the boy’s character.

Wow! I was impressed … a little bit of creativity by filmmakers!

You won’t have any trouble finding “Can’t Buy Me Love” and you won’t have any trouble enjoying it … I guarantee it!
