Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time tonight, let’s watch “Target” with Gene Hackman and Matt Dillon. Here’s an unusual father-son bonding story – Hackman was once in the CIA, but Dillon, his son, didn’t know that until his mother was kidnapped in Europe in a plot to get Hackman back for a little vengeance!
“Target” is the story of a dysfunctional family finding out that it could even be more dysfunctional. Hackman and his wife went their separate ways on vacation: he stayed home while she traveled alone to Europe with a tour group. Little did they know that his past as a CIA agent was waiting for her across the Atlantic Ocean.
Hackman and Dillon begin a rescue mission, but it opens up even more secrets from Hackman’s past before the whole thing plays out to a somewhat conventional ending. I can’t say you’ll see it coming a mile off and it is handled very well by director Arthur Penn.
In “Target,” Penn was working again with Hackman, who earned his first Oscar nomination for Penn’s spectacular “Bonnie and Clyde” with Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway. Hackman didn’t earn any awards for “Target,” but his ability in front of a camera is shown in a powerful fashion with this one.
Dillon does a good job in conveying the brash, rebellious son, who becomes essentially Hackman’s backup in finding his wife. I won’t tell you the end of “Target,” so you’ll have to enjoy it to see it. You’ll enjoy it … I guarantee it!
