Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time on this Thanksgiving Day of 2024 … let’s watch either “Planes, Trains & Automobiles” or “Dutch.” You couldn’t find two different kind of holiday flicks, but both are appropriate for Thanksgiving Day and while you’re not watching college football.
I haven’t reviewed “Planes, Trains …” and so you’ll have to remember it on your own … but don’t forget it is a John Hughes film and therefore it is a wonderful flick with the longsuffering Steve Martin encountering, surviving and finally coming to understand a sensational John Candy. It is a perfect film for Thanksgiving because it gives you the opportunity to laugh; it gives you the opportunity to understand how some folks are disenfranchised; and it is ultimately endearing. Please watch it as soon as possible this holiday season.
As for “Dutch,” it’s more of a modern telling of a dysfunctional family that gets set on the right track by the most unlikely of characters. Ed O’Neill, who was still “Al Bundy” on tee-vee at the time, plays “Dutch” and he’s a blue-collar guy with a bunch of money. He has a girlfriend whose former husband is a society-type and their son is even snootier than the father.
So, “Dutch” volunteers to drive the brat home from boarding school (the father left him there to spend time with his latest bimbo) for Thanksgiving with mom and the fun begins. The road trip by the two is one you won’t forget.
Hughes is the writer and executive producer of “Dutch” and it shows. Actually, a single scene where O’Neill and the boy have dinner in a homeless shelter is simply priceless and makes the movie an endearing slice of life.
So, today on Thanksgiving 2024, make sure you watch “Planes, Trains & Automobiles,” but also “Dutch” … you have a marvelous time … I guarantee it!
