It’s movie time! ‘The Cincinnati Kid’ is more drama than poker … and that’s great

Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time tonight, let’s watch “The Cincinnati Kid” with Steve McQueen and Edward G. Robinson. Here’s a movie about poker that is more an emotional drama than one about gambling and it is a classic with excellent acting.

“The Cincinnati Kid” is the story of “The Kid,” which is played by McQueen. He’s the best stud poker player in New Orleans and possibly the whole world. Well, he wants to have a face-to-face showdown with “The Man,” which is played by Robiinson. Of course, they do play at the end … but I’ll leave the ending for you to find out.

However, the story of “The Cincinnati Kid” is more of a morality play than one about a card game. McQueen is pulled in different emotional directions by different people for different reasons. All of it plays out with top-of-resume acting by a group of top-notch actors.

In addition to McQueen and Robinson, you get Ann-Margaret, Karl Malden, Tuesday Weld, Rip Torn, Joan Blondell and Cab Calloway, showing off his acting chops instead of his legendary musical skills.

“The Cincinnati Kid” is so far superior to 99 out of 100 films released today that you need to find it soonest to watch again or for the first time. It is truly a dramatic treat … I guarantee it!
