For this year, I’m going with the reminder of the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s jump on a comedy track for the college-themed classic “Back to School” with legendary comedian Rodney Dangerfield.
Here’s a film where a parent is actually accepted more at college than the student … and with good reason: Dangerfield knows how to party. He plays a successful businessman whose son is struggling to find his way at college. The son has one friend, played wonderfully by Robert Downey Jr., and the friend has no friends!
Of course, all plays out well by the end of “Back to School,” but not before a bunch of rough spots.
However, the film is a total vehicle for Dangerfield, his one-liners, quips and put-downs, but you might be surprised that he actually does a decent job in the acting department. He has one nice, competent scene with Sally Kellerman, who becomes is love interest as well as his professor.
In the supporting cast of “Back to School,” you get Burt Young as Dangerfield’s menacing driver; Ned Beatty as the dean of the college “David Martin” (“Dean Martin!” chuckles Dangerfield to an also-chuckling Downey); and the manic comic Sam Kinison as the equally manic “Professor Turgeston” (“SAY IT! SAY IT!”).
So, if you’re looking for a little quality time with your humorous side, find “Back to School” on a streaming service and you can always say, “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
