Hooray for Hollyweird! ‘GoldenEye’ deserves better from cognoscenti in the ‘007’ world

For this year, I’m going with the reminder of the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s check out the under-appreciated “James Bond” flick “GoldenEye.” Here’s Pierce Brosnan’s first effort as “007” and it’s a wonderfully executed action flick.

Brosnan brought a new, refined energy to “007” with “GoldenEye,” but, for some reason, the cognoscenti of the Bond-ian universe have never given this film or any of Brosnan’s efforts much respect. Unfortunately, these are the same folks who twitter about the greatness of Daniel Craig, who I say has just one expression on screen (as if he’s having a bowel movement). Give me Brosnan any day.

“GoldenEye,” which was released in 1995 and will have its 30th anniversary this coming November, extends the superspy’s globe-hopping and save-the-world missions. In this one, Brosnan has to stop bad guys led by a former “double-oh” spy (and Brosnan’s best friend and traitor to England) from using a space weapon to destroy earth.

The strength of “GoldenEye” is its supporting cast that includes Judi Dench as Brosnan’s boss “M;” Izabella Scorupco as Russian “Natalya Simonova” who works with Brosnan to stop the bad guys; and Sean Bean as the traitor “Alec Trevelyan.” I especially found the late Robbie Coltrane amusing as a former KGB agent whose girlfriend can’t sing, but likes doing karaoke (in a very small role for a young-ish Minnie Driver!).

All in all, “GoldenEye” is a total winner as both an action film and part of the world of 007 … so find it on a streaming service and you can always say, “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
