For this year, I’m going with the reminder of the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, check out Burt Reynolds, Lesley-Anne Down and the legendary David Niven in “Rough Cut.”
Here’s one of Burt’s little-remembered action/caper films and he does his usual turn of smooth comedy and helps create a watchable film. “Rough Cut” is the story of an American ex-pat in London who is among the world’s most successful jewel thieves. Niven is out to catch him and is using Down as bait.
You won’t have to strain your brain to enjoy “Rough Cut” … it has a straightforward plot where you see each turn coming from a mile away, but you don’t mind since it’s so much fun seeing Reynolds and Down from an upper-crust party to motoring in a stolen car (she did it, not he) to Wimbledon and then onto Europe.
“Rough Cut” winds up as you might expect, but I’ll let you see the details for yourself.
Yes, “Rough Cut” is loads of fun, but not everyone liked it … especially after its first director was fired then re-hired; a third director brought in for final scenes; and it’s writer hated the changes made to his screenplay that he challenged to have his name removed, but could only change it.
The writer of “Rough Cut” was the legendary Larry Gelbart of tee-vee’s “M*A*S*H” fame. Gelbart wound up having his name changed to “Frances Burns” … and that was of one of his most recognized characters from “M*A*S*H:” the nebbish “Maj. Frank Burns.” Check out the credits … you see it!
Go out of your way to find “Rough Cut” with Burt Reynolds. You’ll definitely say … “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
