For this year, I’m going with the reminder of the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s check out the little-remembered “Brass Target” about a conspiracy plot to kill U.S. Gen. George Patton after the end of World War II.
The story of “Brass Target” expands on the conspiracy theory that Patton didn’t die of injuries suffered in an automobile crash but was assassinated because of him being controversial in post-war Germany and seeking personal power to run to become the U.S. president to the theory he was getting too close in an investigation into stolen gold. A less-than-adequate book called “Killing Patton” was “co-written” by TV personality Bill O’Reilly.

“Brass Target” takes up the gold conspiracy theory and isn’t good (the ending is really formulaic and tough to experience), but it has an outstanding cast including the outstanding John Cassavetes, who was nominated twice for Oscars as a director and once as an actor (not for this one). Cassavetes is on the trail of the gold crooks, too, but not in the plot to kill Patton.
I liked Cassavetes best in Paul Mazursky’s “Tempest” with his wife Gina Rowlands. His effort in “Brass Target” doesn’t compare, but his considerable talent brings the level of this film up to an “acceptable” level.
Other actors in the large supporting cast include the always wonderful Max von Sydow, Patrick McGoohan, Sophia Loren and noted TV star Robert Vaughn. It’s too bad, but Loren’s character isn’t given anything to work with and her part could have been cut without losing any of the storyline.
It’s a streaming world, so go find “Brass Target” … and then you’ll definitely say … “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
