Hooray for Hollyweird! ‘Thank You for Smoking’ tops among ‘forgotten’ greats

For this year, I’m going with the reminder of the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s watch one of my favorite “forgotten” films: “Thank You for Smoking” with Aaron Eckhart, William H. Macy and Maria Bello.

“Thank You for Smoking” is simply pure cinema magic: Eckhart is the tobacco industry’s Energizer Bunny … he’s always running at full-throttle and has the intelligence and wit to cut down anyone, even while defending the right of teen smoking on a tee-vee show featuring a teen with lung cancer from smoking!

You’ll enjoy this entire film because “Thank You for Smoking” encompasses all phases of life: from work to personal lives. Take the controversy about smoking (yes, there was controversy) to the advertising game to even a man’s relationship with his son as affected by his divorce. Toss in a cold, calculating movie mogul (putting smoking into movies) and a back-stabbing reporter (who writes the truth, but is vilified because she got the news form Eckhart in bed) and you’ve got a movie.

The best scene in “Thank You for Smoking” is between Eckhart and his son as he explains why he supports something as negative as the tobacco industry and why he doesn’t have to be “right” to win an argument. Click here to watch it …

It is just wonderful storytelling with great writing, direction and acting.

“Thank You for Smoking” along with “Big Trouble” with Tim Allen, Rene Russo and an ever better supporting cast than this one, are at the top of my list on “How did I miss these in the theater?” Both are sensational films that I’ve watched multiple times over the years.

It’s a streaming world, you’ll easily find both “Thank You for Smoking” and “Big Trouble” … and then you’ll definitely say … “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
