Hooray for Hollyweird! ‘Streets of Fire’ wanted to be something, but came up short

For this year, I’m going with the reminder of the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s check out “Streets of Fire” from 1984 with Michael Paré, Diane Lane, Amy Madigan, Willem Dafoe and Rick Moranis.

“Streets of Fire” was billed as a “rock ’n’ roll fable,” but it never lives up to that benchmark. Don’t get me wrong, the music is good and the film is noir-stylish, but the two actually clash, rather than come together to be a great film.

Director Walter Hill had the same problem with the cult fav “The Warriors” from a few years before: it was stylish, but lacked something. “Streets of Fire” isn’t necessarily lacking, but somehow it seems that it could have been so much better.

“Streets of Fire” has a soldier (Pare) called home when his former girlfriend (Lane), the lead singer of a popular group, is kidnapped by a motorcycle gang led by Dafoe. He joins up with another former soldier played by Madigan and, along with Lane’s manager (Moranis), set out to rescue her.

A whole bunch of things happen – of course! – but real start to the music is the motorcycle gang’s headquarters where the real-life “Blasters” are playing. Our intrepid group then picks up a group of singers that turn out to be very talented (you’ll enjoy their number) and at the end Lane’s character is back on stage in concert!

It’s too bad that “Streets of Fire” couldn’t be more like “American Graffiti” in that the music became not just a soundtrack, but the thread tying the whole thing together. Ah, well … you’ll enjoy “Streets of Fire.”

It’s a streaming world, so you won’t have any trouble finding “Streets of Fire” … and then you’ll definitely say … “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
