Hooray for Hollyweird! ‘You Kill Me’ is a dark, disturbing motion picture

For this year, I’m going with the reminder of the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s try a dark drama that offers some disturbing moments: “You Kill Me” with Ben Kingsley and Téa Leoni.

The disturbing moments aren’t when Kingsley, who stars as an alcoholic hitman sent from his home base in Buffalo, N.Y., to San Francisco to dry out, plies his trade. It is scenes from the funeral home where he works and how his alcoholism continues to affect him.

However, there are some somewhat-light moments in “You Kill Me” such as when Kingsley tells his personal story at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting and includes that he kills people, his AA sponsor asks him afterwards whether or not he should have said all of those details. Kingsley replies, “It’s Alcoholics Anonymous.” The sponsor retorts, “Somehow I don’t really feel that’s what they had in mind when they came up with the name, but you never know.”

Kingsley and Leoni begin a relationship in “You Kill Me” after a death in her family brings her to the funeral home for a less than conventional discussion with Kingsley about shoes on the dead man (see what I mean about “disturbing?”). It all wraps back up in Buffalo at the end of a gang war.

You don’t get too-deep of a supporting cast, but it is wonderful talent with Bill Pullman as the mob’s creepy representative keeping an eye on Kingsley in San Francisco; Luke Wilson as Kingsley’s AA sponsor; and Dennis Farina and Philip Baker Hall as opposing gang bosses in Buffalo.

“You Kill Me” is serious, dark drama and the actors acquit themselves well in it. So, check out “You Kill Me” … and, remember, it’s a streaming world, so you won’t have any trouble finding “You Kill Me” … and then you’ll definitely say … “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
