Hooray for Hollyweird! ‘Spy’ is a simply marvelous turn for McCarthy

For this year, I’m going with the reminder of the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s go with “Spy” – the wonderful, rollicking spy thriller that stars Melissa McCarthy, who does as much as “James Bond” in any of his movies – but then drops F-bombs galore such as Jimmy would never do!

“Spy” has all the trappings of the great espionage story: international locales; adopting different identities; and fights and gunfights. McCarthy is surprisingly excellent in kicking the asses of bad guys and knows how to add insult to injury (after pushing a guy off a balcony to his death, she looks over the rail … vomits on him and drops a knife that sticks in his throat!). Yes, you gotta see it to appreciate it!

I just don’t have accolades enough for “Spy” and McCarthy. You’ll also see good jobs from co-stars Jude Law and Jason Statham as well as great work from Allison Janney and other supporting cast members.

I don’t know if I should cheer that a sequel to “Spy” hasn’t been made or come away saddened by a sequel that isn’t worthy of being close to the original. I understand there were rumors about a sequel, but none every developed to an actual production.

You won’t have any trouble finding “Spy” … it’s a streaming world … and then you’ll definitely say … “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
