For this year, I’m going with the reminder of the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s check out the almost-forgotten “French Postcards.” No, it is NOT about those kinds of a “French postcard.”
“French Postcards” is an ensemble somewhat comedy-drama about a group of students from the U.S. going to France for a school-year of study. All bring some kind of baggage to Paris and the film plays out exploring the students’ lives and their coming-of-age across the Atlantic at a snooty French school.
I’m not sure why I enjoy “French Postcards,” but the film from 1979 is head-and-shoulders above the crap being shoveled out by Hollyweird today. While you don’t have any A-list actors in the film, the entire cast gives a superior effort and you’d be hard-pressed to air any serious criticism.
The key player in “French Postcards” is Miles Chapin as “Joel” and he falls for Parisian “Toni,” played by the late Valerie Quennessen. Along a similar track is David Marshall Grant as “Alex” and he becomes part of the triangle with the school’s two main characters: the late Marie-France Pisier as “Catherine Tessier” and noted French character actor Jean Roschfort as “Monsieur Tessier” and I liked him in “Who’s Killing the Great Chefs of Europe?” (click here to read my review).
I’m not going to outline any other details about “French Postcards” because they flow naturally through the film, you should see them for yourself and there’s really no peak with the exception of the students’ show at the end of the film.
As I understand it, you’ll have to “rent” or “buy” “French Postcards” through a streaming service as it doesn’t appear to be free viewing on any platform (I have the DVD) … still, it’s a streaming world … find it and then you’ll definitely say … “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
