For this year, I’m going with the reminder of the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s watch “Adventures in Babysitting” with Elisabeth Shue and a supporting cast, while not A-list, does a solid job.
You might remember director Chris Columbus for other films (from “Home Alone” and it’s first sequel; work in the “Harry Potter” franchise; or for “Mrs. Doubtfire”), but you probably don’t realize that “Adventures in Babysitting” was his first effort as a director (and he was Stephen Spielberg’s protégé at the time).

Although youth-oriented with a happy ending pretty much guaranteed, “Adventures in Babysitting” is strong enough that adult audiences will enjoy it. Columbus does a wonderful job of telling the story of a teenager who has to babysit when she gets dumped by her boyfriend (his perfidy becomes apparent later in the film) and then hauled into “adventures” by circumstance – including climbing up the side of a downtown Chicago skyscraper and fending off a street gang in an elevated train car.
Shue gives a sterling performance in “Adventures in Babysitting” and she and her young charges wind up singing the blues in club as they flee criminals (watch the film for context). The late Albert Collins helps them “ad lib” a song called “Babysitting Blues.” Later, you’ll get a dose of “Southside Johnny” Lyon and his “Asbury Jukes” at a frat party (see, not all just teenager stuff).
“Adventures in Babysitting” is more than worth your time, so, find it! It’s a streaming world … find “Father Goose” and then you’ll definitely say … “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
