For this year, I’m going with the reminder of the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s enjoy “Grandma’s Boy.” It is an out-and-out stoner flick that was originally set to go straight to video, but it packs a comedy punch, if you’re not opposed the use of marijuana.
In “Grandma’s Boy,” you get Allen Covert as the 30-something grandson who moves in with “Grandma,” played by tee-vee icon Doris Roberts. Covert, who played Adam Sandler’s caddy in “Happy Gilmore,” is the focus of the film and is also the co-writer along with co-star Nick Swardson.

However, it is Roberts and Shirley Jones, who plays one of two of Roberts’ roommates in “Grandma’s Boy,” who make the biggest comedy impression. Roberts does her usual job as being endearing, especially when she’s high on marijuana, and Jones is hyper-sexualized and enjoys playing a cougar’s cougar to a young man who’s a friend of Covert (her line about Charlie Chaplain is just one of many hilarious that she delivers with aplomb).
I won’t bore you with the plot (which is about a video game), but will just say that the supporting cast does a good job from Linda Cardelllini who is the expert manager brought in to ride herd on the games final development stage to small, quirky scenes from David Spade and Rob Schneider. You’ll also get Covert’s interesting pot dealer and his friend “Dr. Shakalu,” a lion, a monkey and a wonderful party at Roberts’ house where a strip club’s patrons congregate.
It all winds up with Roberts dueling a video game designer in defense of “Grandma’s Boy.” It’s a streaming world … I guarantee you’ll enjoy “Grandma’s Boy” and then you’ll definitely say … “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
