Hooray for Hollyweird! ‘Bobby Deerfield’ shows that ‘greats’ can be ‘bad,’ too!

We’re headed to the summer of 2025 and I’m continuing the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s use “Bobby Deerfield” as an example of how even a great director and wonderful stars can plop a big one in the pool.

“Bobby Deerfield” is directed by the late Sydney Pollack and stars Oscar-winner (not for this one) Al Pacino in the title role and Marthe Keller. It is the story about a race car driver whose teammate is seriously hurt in a crash and how meeting a woman at the other driver’s convalescent clinic changed him from being an emotionless, vacant person to one whose life has opened back up again.

Sounds good, right? Well, sounds and sights can be deceiving.

When I saw “Bobby Deerfield” in the theater in 1977, I liked it and this memory is why I found it again and reviewed it for my blog. Yet, the one discordant memory was that this film was only time I ever saw someone in the theater stand up at the end and boo loudly. Boo? Pacino? Boo? Keller? Yes, a big “boo” to both in this stinker.

“Bobby Deerfield” is proof positive and the gold standard for reminding you that just because you have exceptional potential of all the pieces that success is something else altogether. Just as a group of losers can win something, even the best sometimes fail.

With “Bobby Deerfield” it is failure on a massive scale and I’ll cut this short at this point. It’s a streaming world … and maybe you’ll enjoy “Bobby Deerfield” and then you’ll definitely say … “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
