Hooray for Hollyweird! ‘Grosse Pointe Blank’ takes ‘quirky’ to a new level

We’re headed to the summer of 2025 and I’m continuing the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s take a gander at “Grosse Pointe Blank” in which John Cusack is an assassin returning home both to kill and attend his 10th high school anniversary get together!

While Cusack and co-star Minnie Driver are the headliners, three of the supporting cast make “Grosse Pointe Blank” even more special. Dan Aykroyd turns in one of his best-ever efforts in film and Cusack’s sister; Joan, plays his bipolar assistant who pushes him to do the anniversary thing; and Jeremy Piven plays a high school friend who’s now a realtor and ultimately helps with disposing of a body in the high school’s furnace.

The title of “Grosse Pointe Blank” is from Cusack’s character, “Martin Q. Blank” (an assassin is a “blank?”) from the tony Grosse Pointe community in Michigan on Lake St. Clair just east-northeast of Detroit. He “goes home,” but home is now a convenience store as Piven did the sale.

It’s kind of difficult to accept someone as smooth and quirky as Cusack to being an amoral, cold-blooded assassin … at least until you see him kill another hitman with a frying pan. Cusack obviously enjoys playing this type of convoluted character and it shows on screen in every one of his scenes in “Grosse Pointe Blank.”

I also have high praise in “Grosse Pointe Blank” for Aykroyd, who has had the peaks and valleys in motion pictures … and some of the valleys are truly low points in cinema. However, as “Grocer,” who’s a competing hitman, Aykroyd wants Cusack to join his assassins’ union!

Ah well, you’ll find every actor’s work solid in this one. It’s a streaming world … and maybe you’ll enjoy “Grosse Pointe Blank” and then you’ll definitely say … “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
