Hooray for Hollyweird! ‘The Odessa File’ turns back the clock to the 1960s in (West) Germany

We’re at the beginning of the summer of 2025 and I’m continuing the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s watch “The Odessa File” in memory of the novel’s author Frederick Forsyth, who died last week.

“The Odessa File” is the film made from the novel of the same name and it focuses on former Nazis in the 1960s in West Germany (remember when it was a nation divided after World War II?). It stars Jon Voight and Maximilian Schell, with Schell giving a near-Oscar level performance in his brief time on screen as the former Nazi concentration camp commandant.

The story of “The Odessa File” concentrates on a West German reporter who sets out for his own reasons to find Schell. In 1963, when the novel begins, there were bunches of former Nazis back in mainstream life in West Germany and the government was reluctant to bring them to justice despite the worldwide revulsion held for them.

“The Odessa File” follows the reporter as he puts together his plan to find Schell and ultimately hooks up with a Jewish group that helps him infiltrate the “Odessa,” which was a group (some say it didn’t exist) that worked behind the scenes to foil plots and arrests against former members of the hated SS.

Voight, who gives a rather poor effort in this one, finds his man and … you’ll have to watch for yourself. It is an interesting twist to the story at the end, but you probably had already figured it out.

A sequel to the novel is about to be published, but it is co-written (mostly written, I’d say) by a second author and will never count in my mind as a Forsyth book, much less an extension of “The Odessa File.”

You can spend worse time with a movie, so check out “The Odessa File” … we’re in a streaming day and then you’ll definitely say … “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
