Hooray for Hollyweird! ‘The Getaway’ is Peckinpah’s best and pure cinema magic for McQueen, MacGraw

We’re at the beginning of the summer of 2025 and I’m continuing the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s go with what I believe is the late director Sam Peckinpah’s best film: “The Getaway” with Hollywood icon and tough guy Steve McQueen and Ali MacGraw.

The pair, who would marry the year after the release of “The Getaway,” just simply sizzle together on screen and plow a violent path across the arid Southwest in making their getaway from some tough bad guys. You see, McQueen plays a bank robber who is given parole by a crooked official so he can plan and execute a robbery.

You obviously have to watch “The Getaway” to enjoy the twists and turns in both plot and the emotional bills that come due for all the characters. You’ll also take little time in appreciating just how good the late Peckinpah was behind the camera(s).

Not only do McQueen and MacGraw give top-of-resume efforts in “The Getaway,” but you’ll find excellent work from the supporting cast that is topped by Oscar winner Ben Johnson (not for this one) as the crooked parole board member; Al Lettieri, who was ultra bad-guy “Sollozo” in “The Godfather,” plays a bad guy for the bad guys; Sally Struthers of “All in the Family” fame plays an over-sexed wife who cuckolds her husband by making him watch her and Lettieri in bed; and Bo Hopkins, who worked for Peckinpah in several films, rounds out the gang.

I don’t know why I don’t have “The Getaway” on my Top 10 list of favorite films, but it sure comes in 11th!

You won’t have any trouble finding “The Getaway” because … we’re in a streaming day and you can easily find it … and then you’ll definitely say … “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
