Hooray for Hollyweird! ‘TAG: The Assassination Game’ part of a small genre in cinema

We’ve begun summer of 2025 in earnest and I’m continuing the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s go with “TAG: The Assassination Game” and it’s one of two films in just about the smallest genre of cinema to come out of Hollyweird!

Along with “Gotcha!” with Anthony Edwards and Linda Fiorentino, “TAG: The Assassination Game,” which co-stars Robert Carradine and Linda Hamilton, the two films have the component of a game called “Killer,” or it was sometimes known as “Assassin.” Players chase each other and “kill” them with a suction cup from a toy gun, a bit of water from a squirt gun or, in some games, a paintball (as in “Gotcha!”). It was usually played on college campuses, but sometimes at high schools.

The hilarious film “Big Trouble” with Tim Allen and Rene Russo has the game as a minor substory, but it is not as integrated throughout the film as with “TAG: The Assassination Game.”

BTW, can you imagine such a game at any school today? Students running around pretending to kill each other? You’d have a lockdown in a minute and black gunship helicopter hovering in 10 minutes!

In “TAG: The Assassination Game,” Carradine is a reporter for his college’s newspaper (remember those?) and becomes enamored with Hamilton, who is a top-notch player in the campus “Killer” game. Unknown to everyone but becoming clearer with each murder, the game’s top player has begun killing for real after losing in one game.

You don’t get much of a supporting cast with this one, but the main “killer” Bruce Abbott (who would marry Hamilton after meeting her for this movie) does a good job as does Kristine DeBell as Hamilton’s friend.

Ultimately, Carradine gets his story and winds up with Hamilton on his side and … well, you can guess the rest of “TAG: The Assassination Game.”

We’re in a streaming day and you can easily find “TAG: The Assassination Game” … and then you’ll definitely say … “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
