We’ve begun summer of 2025 in earnest and I’m continuing the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s take a look at the cult favorite “The Killer Elite” from director Sam Peckinpah and co-starring James Caan and Robert Duvall.
While “The Killer Elite” has co-stars, it is much more Caan’s movie. Duvall has the second most-important character, but just about every frame of the film feature Caan … from the early part where he and Duvall work together to the hospital and recovery for Caan after Duvall’s treachery to their final showdown that isn’t the climax of the film.
The supporting cast of “The Killer Elite” is just so-so as it has several solid actors including Mako, Burt Young, Bo Hopkins, Arthur Hill and Gig Young. However, none play in front of the camera(s) more than Caan.
“The Killer Elite” is the story of treachery and corporate malfeasance with a company that “protects” individuals from harm and loosens violence on those they’re paid to loose violence upon. Caan and Duvall work for this company, but Duvall’s loyalty is bought away and he becomes the enemy … that’s hired by a member of the company against company interests.
Whew! Peckinpah does an OK job with this one, but, frankly, it isn’t one of his best. However, something from Peckinpah is better than most from most other directors.
Caan does what should have been award-winning work, but “The Killer Elite” is an “action” film. We’re in a streaming day and you can easily find “The Killer Elite” … and then you’ll definitely say … “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
