We’re near the beginning of the fall season for 2025 and I’m continuing the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s check out a World War II espionage thriller called “Eye of the Needle” with the late Donald Sutherland and Kate Nelligan.
“Eye of the Needle” is the fictitious story of a German spy in Great Britain as the Allies build up for the invasion that will become known as “D-Day.” The Allies have had a massive operation of deceit that is trying to direct the attention of the Nazis away from the landing zone. Sutherland, as the “Needle” because of the stiletto he favors as a weapon, uncovers the deception and must make it to a rendezvous with a U-boat in order for him to get proof back to Germany.
Along the way, Sutherland winds up on a remote island where he seduces a man’s wife before the climax of the story.
It’s not a good film in any way. Here’s my opening paragraph in my review: “Eye of the Needle” might have been a good espionage film. It isn’t. “Eye of the Needle” could have been a decent World War II film. It isn’t. “Eye of the Needle” should have been a good “frustrated woman gets taken by the wrong guy and gets him back” film. It doesn’t even come close. However, the oddest thing is that while there are a lot of things that it isn’t, “Eye of the Needle” isn’t THAT bad.
After Sutherland and Nelligan, who plays the wife, you won’t find much in the way of help by the supporting cast – most of whom appear to be the rejects from a casting call for a background scene in a Monty Python film.
In this streaming day, you can find “Eye of the Needle” and will enjoy it (as far as a bad film goes) … and then you’ll definitely say … “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
