Welcome back to my blog as January in 2026 comes to a close. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, for today I’ll turn to another great espionage film with Robert Redford: “Sneakers” … and it has an even better and more interesting supporting cast than does his magnificent “Three Days of the Condor.”

In “Sneakers,” Redford is the grownup who, as a college student, became a fugitive because of a hacking venture. Today (as to the movie’s setting), he leads a ragtag group of hackers and a onetime CIA spy in a business that tests security systems for companies such as banks.

Redford has hidden his past until a couple of government agents show up to “hire” the company for an illegal operation. Their hammer to force the criminal act is that know Redford’s real identity. The job: steal a computer decryption device that the government needs but can’t steal for itself. Of course, there’s much more to the story, but I’ll let “Sneakers” play out further for you.

“Sneakers” has a simply a sensational cast. All six of the featured actors were either Oscar winners or nominees.

With “Sneakers,” Legendary comedian Dan Aykroyd gives one of the best performances of his career as “Mother,” a conspiracy theorist who loves needling the ex-CIA guy. You also get River Phoenix in his fourth-to-last film before his drug-induced death in 1993 at the awfully young age of 23. Along with Aykroyd and Phoenix is the quiet two-time Oscar nominee Mary McDonnell, who tries to bring balance to the group of misfits.

“Sneakers” also has legendary actor Sidney Potier and Oscar-winner Ben Kingsley.

Finally, you get a big twist at the end of “Sneakers” and the denouement is a comical scene where James Earl Jones, as a federal team leader, must deal with the fallout and unexpected and hilarious demands of the group.

Oh, the group calls each of their security tests a “sneak,” as they’re trying to sneak past security systems.

So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “Sneakers.” You’ll definitely thank me later.
