Welcome back to my blog as January in 2026 is near its close. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, for today let’s check out the multi-Oscar winner “The Right Stuff” about the birth of our country’s space program and the initial group of astronauts in the Project Mercury program.
At its heart, “The Right Stuff” is about the Mercury astronauts, who included air and space legends John Glenn (played by Ed Harris) and Alan Shepard (played by Scott Glenn), along with five more fliers, but begins with the story of breaking the sound barrier with the equally legendary Chuck Yeager (played by the late Sam Shepard).
“The Right Stuff” is film storytelling on a massive scale with a massive cast of the astronauts, their wives and assorted NASA administrators and politicians. I’m not going to even try to condense the plot, as everyone reading this recommendation has either seen the film or is aware of the historic story being told on-screen.
The top of the cast is top-shelf in“The Right Stuff,” as is the expanded supporting cast. The top of the cast also includes Dennis Quaid, the late Fred Ward and Barbara Hershey. As the film was nominated for eight Oscar nominations and got four wins, you don’t get American cinema much better than this one unless you use the word “Godfather.”
So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “The Right Stuff.” You’ll definitely thank me later.
