Ticket to the Movies: ‘Looker’ has sci-fi promise, but little in the way of delivery

Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, for today, let’s look at a sci-fi flick with lots of promise but little in the way of delivery: “Looker” from director Michael Crichton and co-starring Albert Finney.  Susan Dey and James Coburn.

“Looker” is a film from 1981 that predicted an artificial intelligence future where computers created video without needing human actors/models. The pioneering company needed women to scan (and you get some nudity from both a Playboy magazine model as well as Dey, who you might remember more from tee-vee’s “The Partridge Family”), but first needed them to have specific plastic surgery for their facial form to be correct.

Enter Finney as the plastic surgeon and he eventually takes Dey under his protection as a murder plot against the women evolves in “Looker.” The menacing, deadly “Moustache Man” is the one dispatching the beautiful women (the “lookers”) while toting a light-emitting device called the “LOOKER” (Light Ocular-Oriented Kinetic Emotive Responses).

With “Looker,” the late Mr. Crichton, who was more talented than this film reveals, doesn’t manage to craft a compelling film, despite the prescience for the coming technology. The film’s solid cast doesn’t save or even appear that they made the attempt.

So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and find “Looker” on one of several streaming services. Don’t worry, you’ll thank me later.
